The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in Austin, TX

Explore the World's First Plug-in Hybrid SUV

When you slip behind the wheel of the Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), you're driving a vehicle unlike any other on the planet. While twin electric motors work with an efficient gas engine to deliver optimized performance, you're enjoying a smooth, quiet ride that belies the vehicle's underlying power. Discover how much more there is to driving -- take command of a new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Innovative PHEV System

The system that's at the heart of the Outlander PHEV is extremely eco-conscious, allowing you to take advantage of zero fuel consumption and zero CO2 emissions when you're in all-electric driving mode. If you want to cover greater distances, simply switch to hybrid mode and enjoy excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions. You're even able to generate electricity as you're driving, providing you with the range to travel vast expanses without worry -- always a helpful feature in Texas!

Separately-mounted motors at the front and rear axles provide responsive all-wheel drive performance, ensuring driving stability and handling. The generator transforms power from the 2.0-liter gas engine into electricity, recharging the battery and helping the electric motors when needed. The battery rests under the floor to allow for maximum cabin space, while also lowering the SUV's center of gravity to improve handling and safety.

Choose from three drive modes, two of which employ hybrid technologies:

  • EV Drive Mode, which powers the vehicle only with electricity from the battery, resulting in zero emissions and fuel consumption.
  • Series Hybrid Drive Mode also propels the SUV with engine-generated electricity, with the gas engine generating electricity when the battery level gets low, or to add power needed when you're ascending hills or accelerating rapidly.
  • Parallel Hybrid Driving Mode employs the engine to power the vehicle, with assistance coming from the electric motors when a boost in power is required.

Multiple charge modes accommodate your busy life, not the other way around. Charge at home in about five hours with the onboard charger and charging cable. If you're on the road, the quick charger allows you to get to 80 percent capacity in as little as 25 minutes when you use a commercial charging facility.

An EV switch allows you to prioritize all-electric driving and prevent the engine from starting, while an energy usage indicator lets you know how efficiently you're driving. You can even control battery usage with the press of a button, while Eco Mode control enables more efficient use of the engine, motors and air conditioning. Finally, a paddle selector that's mounted on the steering wheel lets you adjust the vehicle's regenerative braking strength to one of six settings.

Of course, if you're navigating through traffic, you're going to want a vehicle that can deliver the power you want when you want it. The Outlander PHEV responds quickly to your command, with optimal torque and traction delivered on demand to each wheel. The result? Smooth, powerful acceleration, with stable handling in all types of road conditions.

With such features as blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, auto-dimming rearview mirror, active stability control, hill start assist, and automatic high beams, the Outlander PHEV is well-equipped to offer the driver-assistance that makes you more comfortable driving from West Lake Hills to Kyle TX.

Parking's made easier thanks to rear cross traffic alert, a surround-view monitor, and ultrasonic misacceleration mitigation -- which warns of a collision in either front or back when you're parking, including instances where the driver may have accidentally slipped the SUV into D and hit the gas pedal.
